The energy value of food and drink is measured in units of heat callled calories. Food is like a fuel which burns internally to produce energy. Most of our food contains carbohydrates, fats and proteins which are called nutrients. These nutrients determine the energy of food. On an average you spend about 1 calorie a minute. Your day to day activities determine the amount of energy you use per day. Every action of our body needs energy that is calories. So people in different profession use up different amounts of energy. This energy is replaced by what you eat and drink.

Normally women need about 2000 calories and men about 2500 calories. If you select low calorie items from your calorie chart, you can eat quite a lot. So make sure your body burns more calories than it consumes. Just look at this, if you eat 25 grams of carbohydrates or proteins it has approximately 100 calories and the same amount of fat contains about 250 calories.
